7 Tips for Maintaining Your Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance Tyres for Longevity

Posted November 7, 2023

The Goodyear EfficientGrip is an innovative performance tyre designed to deliver excellent wet weather traction and braking. With proper maintenance, EfficientGrip tyres can potentially last for tens of thousands of miles before needing replacement.

Follow these 7 simple tips to ensure you get the maximum lifespan and performance out of your Goodyear EfficientGrips performance Tyre:

#1 Check Tyre Pressure Frequently

Under-inflated tyres are the number one cause of premature tyre wear. Low pressures create more rolling resistance which generates higher heat and accelerates tread wear.

Check your EfficientGrip tyres, including the spare, at least once a month to ensure they are inflated to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressures. Use an accurate tyre gauge to check when the tyres are cold for the most precise reading.

Adding more air as needed will reduce wear and help your EfficientGrips last longer. Proper inflation also ensures optimal wet weather grip and braking performance.

#2 Rotate Tyres Every 5,000 – 10,000km

Rotating your tyres evens out the wear across the whole set. Front tyres typically wear faster than rear tyres, so rotation helps them wear evenly and prolongs their lifespan.

Have your EfficientGrips rotated every 5,000 – 10,000km by a tyre shop. Most vehicles do well on a 5,000km interval, but always consult your owner’s manual.

Sticking to a regular rotation schedule ensures the tread depth stays consistent across all four tyres for better performance. It will also help alert you sooner if one tyre is wearing abnormally.

#3 Wheel Alignment Impacts Tyre Wear

If your vehicle’s wheels are misaligned, it can cause accelerated edge wear on the front tyres. Having an alignment performed when installing new EfficientGrips sets them up for optimal wear from the start.

Alignment should also be checked if experiencing uneven tread wear or if the vehicle is pulling to the left or right. Most vehicles need alignment every 15,000 – 20,000km or annually.

Keeping your wheels properly aligned reduces abnormal tyre wear so your EfficientGrips last for their full lifespan. It also helps with wet weather handling.

#4 Monitor Tread Depth and Replace on Time

As your EfficientGrip’s tread depth decreases over time, so does wet braking and traction performance. Once tread depth is less than 3mm, it’s recommended to replace them.

Occasionally check tread depth with a gauge or penny test. Place a penny head-first into the main groove of the tyre. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, the tread is less than 2/32” (1.6mm) and should be replaced.

Replacing them in time is key to maintaining wet performance and preventing blowouts. Checking tread ensures you get the full potential out of your EfficientGrips.

#5 Avoid Hitting Curbs and Potholes

Repeatedly hitting curbs, potholes or debris can damage your EfficientGrip’s sidewalls, beads, or internal structure. This leads to irregular wear or shorter lifespan.

Be conscious to avoid curbs and potholes when possible. If you do hit something substantial, have a tyre shop inspect for internal damage or alignment changes.

Driving carefully reduces abuse to your EfficientGrips so they wear naturally and last for their full life expectancy.

#6 Use Tyre Protectants Sparingly

Petroleum-based tyre cleaners and protectants may accelerate drying and cracking of the rubber. Use these products minimally and only apply to the sidewalls, not the tread surface.

For tread protection, a high-quality tyre sealant or protective wax provide less risk of harming the rubber. Read labels to ensure the product is safe for use on tyres.

Using protectants sparingly reduces the chance of drying out your EfficientGrips prematurely. Stick to products designed specifically for tyre use.

#7 Store Tyres Properly When Not in Use

Make sure your spare EfficientGrip is stored properly out of direct sunlight and away from electric generators or motors. The heat and ozone from these sources can degrade the rubber.

Storing in a cool, sealed environment prevents drying and cracking over time. An indoor, climate-controlled room is ideal.

Proper storage for your spare maximises its longevity so it’s ready to use when you need it. The same applies for winter, all-terrain or other secondary tyres you switch out seasonally.
